Regional Teas of Ceylon

Sri Lanka’s regional teas are defined by unique combinations of elevation, climate, and soil conditions, resulting in distinctly different flavour profiles across the island. From high-grown to low-grown regions, each area produces teas with its own character, strength, and aroma. This diversity allows for a wide range of applications, from premium single-origin selections to balanced blends for global markets.

Nuwara Eliya

High Grown – 1,800m+

Nuwara Eliya teas are grown at the highest elevations in Sri Lanka, known for their light colour, delicate aroma, and refined character. The cool climate and slow leaf growth contribute to a bright, crisp liquor with subtle floral notes. These teas are often positioned as premium selections, valued for their elegance and distinctive high-grown profile.

Uva

High Grown – 900–1,500m

Uva teas are cultivated in elevated regions exposed to seasonal winds, which significantly influence their unique flavour profile. They are known for producing a bright liquor with brisk character and distinctive aromatic notes. Uva teas are widely recognized for their seasonal quality and are often used in specialty blends and single-origin offerings

Dimbula

High Grown – 1,200–1,600m

Dimbula teas are produced in high-altitude regions with well-balanced climatic conditions, resulting in a smooth and consistent flavour profile. They are known for their bright liquor, medium body, and clean finish. These teas are highly versatile and commonly used in both pure origin offerings and premium blended products.

Kandy

Mid Grown – 600–1,300m

Kandy teas are grown in mid-elevation regions and are known for their rich flavour and balanced strength. The moderate climate produces a darker liquor with a full-bodied character and smooth finish. These teas are widely used in traditional blends and are valued for their consistency and depth.

Ruhuna

Low Grown – below 600m

Ruhuna teas are cultivated in low-altitude regions with warm temperatures, resulting in strong and full-bodied teas. They are known for producing a dark liquor with rich colour and bold flavour. These teas are commonly used in blends that require strength and depth, particularly in international markets.

Sabaragamuwa

Low Grown – below 600m

Sabaragamuwa teas are grown in humid lowland regions, producing fast-growing leaves with unique characteristics. They are known for their dark liquor, smooth body, and slightly sweet flavour profile. These teas are often used in blending and bulk supply due to their consistent strength and distinctive regional identity.

Uda Pussellawa

High Grown – 900–1,500m

Uda Pussellawa teas are produced in high-elevation regions with cooler climates and variable weather conditions. They are known for their light to medium body, smooth texture, and subtle aromatic notes. These teas offer a refined profile and are often used in specialty selections and high-quality blends.
